Levi Rosen

Welcome to the Artists Blog

When did you first become interested in art?

When I was the tender age of three, my Mom and Dad took me to pick my Brother up from his after school art program. When we went to leave I proceeded to make it impossible for myself to be dislodged from the door frame of the class room. I think this was the first inkling that I wanted to be an artist. I haven’t stopped since.

What style of art do you use most?

Hmmm… My own?

Has your style changed from when you first began as an artist?

Of course! Who’s hasn’t. I think I’ve become a lot more worldly and aware of the things that affect myself and my loved ones. Plus I’m constantly learning and improving on my techniques, which lends to a change in style.

What medium do you use?

For my paintings I use acrylic, although I’ve been wanting to get more into oils. I also love clay and sculpture (wood, metal, junk, artistic junk) and I’m an apprentice jeweler and freelance graphic artist, so I think I dabble in a little of everything.

What made you choose that medium?

Impatience and curiosity.

Do your ideas come from life or imagination?

First I have to figure out which is which, then I’ll tell you.

How do you choose your images and colours?

For the images I either just start putting paint on the canvas and see what comes out of it (very much a subconscious effort) or the idea usually just pops in my head and I’m compelled to put my mind inside out for the world to see. As for colors… it really depends on the piece or the mood I’m trying to convey or whats on sale at the art store. My favorite color is green though.

Who is your favourite artist?

That is a very hard question because there are so many artists out there that have amazing talent and ideas. I really can’t just say one, but if I have to I’d say it is my wife for giving birth to our son, the greatest piece of work either one of us will ever create.

What is your favourite piece of work by yourself?

I really like the colors and the flow in “The Dance”

How much time (on average) does it take to complete a work?

Once I get into a piece I work pretty fast. I usually finish a piece in 8 to 10 hours on average.

How well do you take criticism?

Why? you giving?… Just joking. I really like creative criticism, but I do take offense when someone says they just don’t like a piece without validation or reason.

What do you do to overcome a ‘block’?

Load brush, put brush on canvas, see what comes out.

How do you know something is ‘finished’? Is it easy to walk away?

Someone once said a piece is never finished, the artist only decides when to stop. I usually think that I’m finished when I can’t figure out what to do next with the piece. Kind of like a game of “Go” when you are unable to place another piece without any gain in the game.

Have you had exhibits in galleries?

Yes a few. I have had my pieces shown in several group shows at “TAACCL” and “Gallery 19″ no solo shows just yet, but we shall see.

Have you any exhibits in galleries planned for the future?

I would love to, but none in the foreseeable future. Concentrating on family and school/work right now. But if you know anyone interested please send them my way!

What are your plans for the future?

At the moment, be the best Dad that I can be to my son and work on being a bench jeweler. I’d like to have my work in a gallery or two (and selling). I really don’t need to be famous to be happy, but it helps with the bills.

What advice would you give new artists?

Do not give up on your dream. If you truly love the art that you do it will show in your work and you will make it. Put one foot in front of the other even if it feels like the hardest thing you have ever done, it’ll be worth it in the end.

Thank you so much fgor the interview. Your Dance is full of colour and reminds me of a beautiful peacock feather…
