David Lane

When did you first become interested in art?

That’s a good question…. I’m not sure I’m interested in Art. I create these things I create because of some need to express something.

Has your style changed from when you first began as an artist?

Well the tools I use have so, I would say yes.

What style of art do you use most?

Digital Abstracts and landscapes mostly.

What medium do you use?

Digital paint software, and cameras. An occasional acrylic on canvas.

What made you choose that medium?

I make my money as a computer systems analyst. This has made me gravitate towards the digital medium.

Do your ideas come from life or imagination?

I call most of my stuff ‘Mindscapes’, so I guess I would say my imagination; but that’s too simple of an explanation of the process. I just start my works by putting colors and shapes on the blank canvas, until I see something. Then I try to bring that out to the surface.

How do you choose your images and colours?

Mostly its just a random choice. Once I have discovered where I think I’m trying to go with a piece, I will select the colors that seem called for by the process.

Who is your favourite artist?

Well me of course.

Mostly the impressionists, esp Monet, and Cézanne and Camille. Picasso and Dali and Hieronymus Bosch.

What is your favourite piece of work by yourself?

Whatever the last thing I worked on. It like the weather here in upstate New York – changes every ten minutes.

How much time (on average) does it take to complete a work?

Never more that two hours usually.

How well do you take criticism?

Why would anyone ever criticize what I do?  Actually I love it if its helpful. I am just as happy to hear ‘I hate it’, as ‘I love it’, because I want to elicit some reaction from the viewer. If you are going to analyze the work then tell me what you like or don’t like and give suggestions on how to improve it.

What do you do to overcome a ‘block’?

I don’t do anything. I work when the need to do so arises.

How do you know something is ‘finished’? Is it easy to walk away?

For me that’s the hardest part. I never feel my work is any good, or finished, I have learned to just let those thoughts go their own way and ignore them.

Have you had exhibits in galleries?

No.

What are your plans for the future?

I take each day as it comes, I plan as little as possible.

What advice would you give new artists?

Just do it! Be playful and experiment.

‘Be playful’ is n excellent piece of advice.  More artists need to do that I think :)   Thank you so much for the interview :)
