Welcome to the Artists Blog

When did you first become interested in art, in general?

I have not been so interested in art until lately (2-3 years ago), i always have liked literature but I’m not good at writing, I´m way, way, better producing nice pictures haha.

When did you first become interested in photography, specifically?

My first approach to photography was in 2002, i had a Pentax MZ50, but i was not interested too much in taking pictures, it was until 2006 when i started to like a lot taking photos, it relaxes me a lot, Sometimes i just grab the map drive for a new location and take pictures, lots of them.

In what other forms of art do you also work, if any?

Just photography.

I tried writing once, it was a mess

On which style(s) of photography do you specialise?

B&W (urban, architecture)
and
HDR (architecture, landscapes, nature)

Has your style changed from when you first began? If so, why?

Oh yeah, when I started I did not even know what ISO was, I have never taken a photography class, i have read a lot, but all you see, HDR techniques and so, was self learning and i have had some mentors along the way.

Now I´m so much better at HDRs, and B&W, and the way to edit the pictures has improved as well.

What kind of equipment do you use?

Hardware:
Canon EOS 400D
Sigma 10-20mm
Close up lens kit for the sigma 10-20
Canon 18-55mm
Canon 70-300mm
Canon 60mm macro (I borrow it from time to time, I´m not so into macro)

Software:
The gimp 2.4
PS CS3
Photomatix pro 3.0
Neat Image

What made you choose that equipment?

I did not want to buy a professional camera for start, and at the time the 400D was the perfect choice for me.
I love landscapes and researching and viewing the work from various people i decided to buy the sigma 10-20mm, i just love that lens.

90% of the time the sigma is in my camera, maybe I get later a L lens for telephoto, but not at the time.

How do you choose what you’re going to photograph?

Sometimes i have this picture in my mind, and its just time, eventually i find the conditions to take it.
But most of the times is just have your camera as much as possible, open your eyes and the pictures start to appear little by little.

What kind of editing do you perform on your photographs, if any?

I do.

Mostly is this sequence (for non HDRs):
Levels
Reduction of noise (if needed)
High pass filter (if needed)
Contrast (if needed)
Insert frame

For HDRs:
HDR
Tone mapping
Levels
Saturation
Reduction of noise (if needed)
High pass filter (if needed)
Contrast (if needed)
Insert frame

How much time (on average) does it take to complete a work?

it varies from 20 minutes to 60 minutes.

How do you know when a piece is finished? Is it easy to walk away?

Yes it is becoming easier with time.

At the beginning it was hard, but I have now this routine, I´d do some more steps if needed but 95% of the time is not.

I just know its finished, it resembles to what I have in my mind.

What do you do to overcome a ‘block’?

A glass of Stolichnaya unblocks me haha

How well do you take criticism and how do you make use of it?

I used to take it very seriously.

Now I take photographs that I like, if someone else likes them GOOD, I´m glad. If they criticize me I take the good and get rid of the bad.

I have good mentors, but they know how to tell you things.
