Welcome to the Artists Blog

When did you first become interested in art, in general?

Always, I have a bit of a theory that kids are either ‘arty’ or ‘academic’, and if your lucky that natural leaning will be nurtured or at least not squashed! It seems to be way in this family that all the girls are arty. Well at least we all have Blue Peter badges!!

Blue With

When did you first become interested in photography, specifically?

When I had my daughter. The realisation that you can capture a moment in time, from whatever angle is never more satisfying than when you have young children. Although that’s not the sort of photography I do now, it is what promted me to pick up a camera.

In what other forms of art do you also work, if any?

Nothing specific, have just always had a creative leaning. Have been known to put words to paper, but nothing I feel is good enough to share. Oh I know…….. Gift Wrapping, you may laugh but the combination of paper and ribbon can be transformed into something gorgeous!!!!!!!!

Chains

On which style(s) of photography do you specialise?

I don’t think I have a particular style, although I enjoy simple uncluttered images.

Has your style changed from when you first began? If so, why?

I think everyone evolves. Sometimes that has more to do with circumstances than mindset. Life has a habit of changing things and you just have to change with it. Sometimes that makes you see the same things differently, or notice the hidden.

What kind of equipment do you use?

Just digital camera and PS to tweak. Nothing fancy. Not sure technology can compensate for a good eye!

What made you choose that equipment?

All my cameras have been bought for me as gifts, which I’m very grateful for. Firstly how lucky have I been and secondly I would never have made a decision, too much choice and not enough skill to know what I really need !

How do you choose what you’re going to photograph?

I very occasionally have a shot I really really want to take, there’s one on my commute to work at the moment. So unless I get a chauffeur it isn’t going to happen. But by and large shots just pop up in front of me. I think all photographers have to be observant and opportunistic, oh and nosey !!!

What kind of editing do you perform on your photographs, if any?

Depends on the shot. Sometimes you know exactly what it needs and othertimes it’s best to just have a play about and see what happens. And then of course there’s the shot you just can’t get to work and that’s usually the one I tried hard to get.

How much time (on average) does it take to complete a work?

Don’t think I’ve ever spent more than 20 mins tweaking a shot, haven’t got the patience. If it doesn’t happen then I move onto something else, can’t force it.

Night

How do you know when a piece is finished? Is it easy to walk away?

Of course it’s easy to walk away, I’m a happy amateur. I just put everyting down to experience and hope for better next time. Totally believe everything should be fun, cos if not then why are you doing it ?

What do you do to overcome a ‘block’?

How well do you take criticism and how do you make use of it?

Which one of your photographs is your favourite?

It’s odd how the shots you like yourself are not the ones to do well, maybe it’s the emotions attached to shots that make them special to yourself and not others. I guess the footsteps in the sand ‘That was then’ has to be in my top 3 of quality shots.

That Was Then

It was completely spontaneous, a romantic walk along the beach, turned around and there they were, but the sentiment to that shot has completely changed but it still makes me realise I can take ok shots.

Have you exhibited any of your work in galleries?

Only online ones so far.

What are your plans for the future?

I’d like to think I’ll get technically better. Be able to take the exact shot I want without having my fingers crossed all the time (makes it very tricky to hold a camera steady)!

I am lucky to know Sticky from another site and she is a total nutcase but a truly nice person :) Thank you Sticky for this great interview x
